What is a Form 990?
The annual information return most tax-exempt organizations file with the IRS, covering revenue, expenses, assets, governance, programs and the compensation of officers, directors, trustees and the highest paid employees (IRS, About Form 990). It is public: an exempt organization must make its annual returns and exemption application available for public inspection, and returns must be available for a three-year period, with contributor names and addresses excepted (IRS).
The longer explanation is in what is a Form 990, and the differences between the versions are in 990 vs 990-EZ vs 990-N.

What does this lookup cover, and what does it not?
We are not a mirror of every exempt organization. Our starting point is organizations that filed a federal single audit, and we join the IRS data to them — which is why the coverage numbers below are smaller than the IRS universe, and why what we add is the audit side rather than the return itself.
| Data | Organizations | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Single audit history | 67,971 organizations, 402,827 audit records | Federal Audit Clearinghouse |
| — of which nonprofits | 34,572 | FAC |
| IRS registration (EO BMF) | 33,414 | IRS |
| Parsed Form 990 financials | 18,430 (20,321 tax periods) | IRS e-file |
| Filings reporting audited statements | 18,518 of 20,193 (91.7%) | IRS e-file |
For an organization outside that set, use IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search — it covers the full IRS universe, which we deliberately do not duplicate.

What do we add to the IRS data?
- The auditor observed on each filed single audit, year by year.
- Federal awards expended, the threshold that applied, and the major programs reported.
- Findings, material weaknesses, significant deficiencies and repeat findings.
- The accounting fee and paid preparer reported on Form 990, next to the audit record.
- State and city aggregates, so a single organization can be read in context.
For audit year 2024 that means 22,398 nonprofit single audits, of which 3,631 reported at least one finding (16.2%). Aggregates by state are on the statistics pages, and the firms that performed the audits are on audit firms by state.

Can I look up one organization here?
Organization-level pages are being published in batches, state by state, and only where the filings carry enough to say something real — at least two audit years, or one year with a reported finding. Until your organization's page exists, the fastest route is the Federal Audit Clearinghouse search for the audit and IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search for the return. We would rather publish nothing than publish a page with one number on it.
