What is a single audit in government?

The same engagement these pages count. A non-federal entity — a state, a local government, a tribe, a college or a nonprofit — that expends federal awards at or above the threshold in 2 CFR 200.501 has one audit covering both its financial statements and compliance for its major federal programs. These pages summarise the nonprofit filings; the underlying data covers every entity type.

Who audits the government, and what is a government auditor?

Three different roles share the name. Independent CPA firms perform most single audits of local governments and nonprofits. State audit offices audit state agencies and, in many states, local governments directly. Federal inspectors general and the Government Accountability Office audit federal agencies and programs. A government auditor is someone in the second or third group: an auditor employed by a public audit organization rather than by a firm. Who may perform your own single audit is set out in who can perform your single audit.
