A single audit is required when a nonprofit expends at or above the threshold in federal awards in one fiscal year: $1,000,000 for a fiscal year beginning on or after 2024-10-01, and $750,000 before that. What is a single audit?
An audit required of a nonprofit or other non-federal entity that expends $1,000,000 or more in federal awards in a fiscal year. It combines an audit of the organization's financial statements with a review of its compliance with federal program requirements.

Frequently asked questions
What is the current single audit threshold?
$1,000,000 in federal awards expended in one fiscal year, for a fiscal year beginning on or after 2024-10-01. A fiscal year that began before that date uses the earlier $750,000 threshold. Source: 2 CFR 200.501.
How is the threshold applied to our fiscal year?
By the date the fiscal year begins, not the date it ends and not the date the report is filed. A year beginning on or after 2024-10-01 uses $1,000,000; a year beginning before it uses $750,000.
Do I need a single audit if I have multiple federal grants?
Yes, if the total is at or above the threshold. The threshold applies to the sum of every federal award you expend in the fiscal year, added together across all programs and grants, not to any single grant on its own. See how that total splits into major programs.
What if I pass through federal funds to subrecipients?
Amounts you pass through to a subrecipient count toward your own total federal awards expended, in addition to what you spend directly — passing money to another organization does not lower the total your nonprofit is measured against. More on how the threshold is calculated.
What happens if I'm close to the threshold?
If your federal awards expended come in under the threshold for that fiscal year, no single audit is required for that year on the federal threshold alone — though your state, your bylaws or a funder may still require one. See nonprofit audit requirements by state.
Where can I find the official guidance?
The single audit requirement is written out in 2 CFR Part 200, Subpart F — Audit Requirements, part of the Uniform Guidance. Read Subpart F on eCFR.
What happens next?
If you need an audit, you can find firms that audit nonprofits in your state, build a request for proposals and post it for CPA firms at no cost. Once the audit is done, check when it is due at the FAC.
Can I put this check on our own website?
Yes. Paste this into any page; it shows the same form and the same answer, cites 2 CFR 200.501 and links back here. It loads no script and stores nothing a visitor enters.
